  • What is HRJATC?

    The Hampton Roads Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, (HRJATC) itself is made up of four representatives from Local Union 1340, International Brothers of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and four representatives from the Atlantic Coast Chapter, National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).  All individuals who are accepted in the apprenticeship training program are placed to work for signatory contractors of Local Union 1340 IBEW.  All apprentices in the training program are required to complete 8,000 on-the-job training hours as well as 900 classroom related instruction hours.

    The HRJATC meets on a monthly basis to discuss and deal with the administrative issues of the training program.  The HRJATC is funded by a negotiated contribution that each contractor pays per man-hour worked. 

    Qualifications for the Apprenticeship Program                        

    An applicant must meet the following qualifications to be eligible for an interview:

    A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) with one credit of Algebra.

    18 years of age - Birth Certificate required.

    Physically able to perform the work.

    Have a valid driver’s license.

    Must obtain a qualifying score on the Electrical Trades Aptitude Test.

    Veterans must furnish us their copy of DD214 with re-enlistment code at bottom

    OR...

    An individual who can verify that they have worked a minimum of 4000 hours specially in the electrical construction trade. The actual interview will only last between 10 - 15 minutes.

    The classroom training is performed at the HRJATC's state-of-the-art facility at New Horizons Regional Education Center Woodside Lane Campus in Newport News, Virginia. The facility contains our hands-on lab that teaches apprentices how to perform the skills they will need on the job site.
